A simple routine to keep your water crystal clear: pH, chlorine, filtration and shock treatments. Seasonal tips and common mistakes to avoid. Service in Denia and surrounding areas.
Enjoying a spotless pool in Denia, Las Marinas or nearby areas doesn’t require huge effort—just consistency and a clear method. Keeping chemical balance, ensuring proper filtration and checking the equipment regularly helps prevent cloudy water, algae and breakdowns.
With a short but consistent routine—chemical balance + good filtration—your pool in Denia, Ondara or Vergel can stay transparent all year round. If you’d rather leave it to professionals, our pool maintenance service includes certified technicians and continuous follow-up across the Northern Costa Blanca. The 5 essentials for perfect water
1) pH in the optimal range (the foundation of everything)
pH should be kept between 7.2 and 7.6 so the disinfectant works properly and swimming feels comfortable for skin and eyes.
If you adjust the pH (with pH minus or pH plus), test again after 30–60 minutes of recirculation. Correcting pH first—and then the rest of the parameters—is one of the keys to good pool maintenance.
2) Disinfection: Chlorine or salt chlorination
Traditional chlorine
- Recommended free chlorine: 1–3 ppm.
- Shock treatments are essential after rain, heavy use, or if the water starts looking cloudy or greenish.
Salt chlorination
- Keep salinity at the level recommended by the manufacturer.
- Check the condition of the cell regularly.
- Even though it’s a more convenient system, it still needs pH control and occasional shock treatments.
3) Alkalinity and hardness: The “buffer”
Balanced alkalinity stabilises pH and prevents it from rising or dropping abruptly. Check alkalinity weekly in summer and adjust it before correcting pH.
4) Filtration: 50% of the result
Half of your success depends on the filtration system. Chemically “perfect” water can still turn cloudy if filtration is insufficient.
- Clean the skimmer and pump baskets frequently.
- Backwash the filter regularly and keep an eye on the pressure gauge.
- Run more filtration hours in summer and fewer in winter, adjusting based on temperature and use.
5) Circulation and physical cleaning
Circulation complements chemistry and filtration:
- Remove leaves and visible debris with a leaf net.
- Brush the walls and the waterline.
- Vacuum the pool floor if sediment has built up.
Built-up dirt is often the first sign of a chemical imbalance. For terraces, pool decks and surrounding areas, you can rely on a professional cleaning service to keep everything around the pool in top shape.
Minimum seasonal routine (Denia and nearby towns)
Summer (heavy use: Denia, Els Poblets and surroundings)
- Test pH and disinfectant 2–3 times per week.
- Filter the necessary hours depending on temperature (more during heatwaves).
- Shock treat after rain, parties or if the water turns cloudy.
- Check pump, filter and skimmers weekly.
Spring / Autumn (La Xara, Pedreguer, La Sella)
- Weekly pH and disinfection checks.
- Adjust filtration hours as temperatures drop.
- Remove leaves (especially if there’s a garden around the pool).
- Check skimmers, multiport valve and filtration equipment components.
Winter (absent homeowner: Las Marinas, La Pedrera)
On the Costa Blanca, thanks to mild temperatures, most owners don’t do “classic” winterising with special products and covers. The usual approach is to keep the pool running with fewer filtration hours and basic chemical control.
- Do a deep clean before the period of absence.
- Adjust pH and disinfectant levels to correct values.
- Reduce filtration hours, but don’t switch the system off completely.
- Schedule regular inspections to prevent green water and protect the filtration system if you’re not in the area.
Weekly checklist (30–45 minutes)
- Test and adjust pH.
- Check chlorine or salt level and record readings.
- Empty the skimmer and pump baskets.
- Brush key areas; vacuum the bottom if sediment is present.
- Check for leaks, gauges and backwash the filter when needed.
If this routine is difficult to keep up with due to lack of time—or because you live abroad—you can delegate it to a professional pool maintenance service with scheduled visits.
Common mistakes that make water cloudy
- Ignoring pH: Without correct pH, chlorine won’t work and algae appears.
- Filtering too few hours on hot days or when there are many swimmers.
- Doing shock treatments without brushing or improving circulation.
- Forgetting motor and filter maintenance, reducing equipment lifespan.
- Neglecting the surroundings: An untidy garden or pest issues near the pool can dirty the water more often; in these cases, it’s best to combine garden maintenance and pest control.
When should you call a professional?
There are situations where, no matter how much you adjust pH, chlorine and filtration, the most practical solution is specialised help:
- Persistent green water despite shock treatments and continuous filtration.
- Abnormal filter pressure, noises, or the pump losing prime.
- Pre-summer start-up, or winter maintenance when you’re not in the area.
- Absentee owners who need to combine pool maintenance, comprehensive home maintenance and—if needed—key holding.
